The Beneficial Blueberry

Ahhh, it is summer in Wisconsin and we certainly welcome you with open arms. It brings such joy to our hearts (and bellies) to see the beautiful array of colors lining the stalls at Farmer’s Markets and filling up the produce sections across town. As we merrily fill our baskets and carts we have taken time to reacquaint ourselves with some of our favorite summer all stars. So, in paying homage to the tasty gems that are oh so delicious AND nutritious, we thought we would highlight the profound healing this summer harvest has to offer.

So, with no further ado, we shine our attention upon the one-the only: BLUEBERRY!!! Yes, you sweet candies of the earth, with your tangy sweetness it is you we are raving about today.

Did you know that blueberries:

• Are the best fruit for free radical protection from cancer
• Are the most beneficial food you can eat for healing the eyes and protecting against the development of glaucoma
• Are the easiest berry to digest, moving through the colon like a broom clearing debris
• Are known to support healthy blood pressure when eaten routinely
• Are beneficial for improving memory, likely due to nerve cell protection from their vast array of antioxidant nutrients

There is great comfort in acknowledging that we can take an active role in our health. With this in mind, the nutrients we choose to ingest truly do hold potential for significant healing and balance. So, next time you enjoy a delicious blueberry, extend a little gratitude for the gifts they offer!

In our home, blueberries are a staple this time of year. We like to get a bit creative with the bounty in our own backyard at which point the Blueberry-Mint Smoothie was created. We sure do enjoy this refreshingly cool treat and thought you may too!

Ingredients:

• ½ cup frozen blueberries
• ½ cup coconut milk (we like coconut, but other non dairy options work too)
• ½ avocado
• 4 sprigs of mint (leaves only)
• ½ cup-1 cup of ice

Instructions:
• Pour all ingredients into blender, blend until smooth!
**We like making larger batches to freeze and enjoy later**
